 What are Cow Magnets?

Cow magnets are popular with dairy farmers and veterinarians to help prevent Hardware Disease in cattle. While grazing, cows eat everything from grass and dirt to nails, staples and bits of bailing wire (referred to as tramp iron). What is a Cow Magnet?

In a few rare cases, it has also been seen that the metal object penetrates the entire wall of the reticulum and then pierces the heart sac, which causes pericarditis.

Now in mild condition, the cow generally loses her appetite and decreases her milk output, along with losing the ability to gain weight. This can be treated in its early stages by using antibiotics or a surgery that involves physically removing the object. But why should we waste so much money on surgery and make our animals suffer if we can prevent it beforehand.

Now to prevent hardware disease which risks the lives of the cows, we can use Cow Magnets to reduce the risk of Hardware disease. Calves when they are about six months old have a major change in their diet and that is the time when they shift from sucking their mother’s milk to feeding on grass.
